Skin’s Cellular Health and Ageing
While aesthetic treatments can combat the signs of ageing, wouldn’t it be better to slow them down all together?!

What is cellular health?
Cells provide structure and function for all living things. It’s estimated that the body contains 50-100 trillion cells, of which there are up to 200 types, that carry out distinct roles.
The cells work alone to produce energy and proteins, while also working together to build tissue, which form organs and keep your body functioning.
Your body constantly regenerates new cells but, as we age, the rate and speed of this begins to decline. Many cells will start to function abnormally or will lose their ability to function all together. This is when we start to see the signs of ageing – aesthetically and through a decline in general health.
How does cellular ageing impact skin?
Fibroblasts are the cells that produce collagen and elastin, which give skin its structure and elasticity. When these age, you will notice that your skin becomes less plump and will start to sag. Fine lines and wrinkles will also start to appear. Lots of people describe looking sad, tired or angry.
As the melanocytes – the cells responsible for skin pigment – start to decline, you may notice dark or light patches on your skin too.
Skin can also get drier, while wounds will take longer to heal.
Can we maintain cellular health?
Leading a healthy lifestyle can have a really positive effect on your cellular health. Consider:
- Eating a more balanced diet
- Improving your hydration levels
- Reducing alcohol intake (the NHS recommends no more than 14 units a week)
- Increasing exercise (aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week)
- Using SPF daily
- Quitting smoking
